Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Departing with 35,000 tons of Hibtac pellets early Friday morning were Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader. The pair cleared the Superior piers at 01:08, their lights slowly disappearing into the darkness as they began the long journey to Toledo. Arriving later on a beautiful Duluth morning was familiar face Arthur M. Anderson. Though she entered the canal at 07:12, it would be another two hours before she reached the C. Reiss Coal Co. dock and began to offload her cargo of limestone from Calcite. At 11:13, Algoma’s Capt. Henry Jackman made a proud Canada Day entrance in Superior while on her way to BNSF Dock 5 to load ore. She would be the only Canadian vessel to arrive or depart on the holiday. Mesabi Miner was inbound Duluth 30 minutes later for the east side of CN Dock 6 where she would wait for her sister James R. Barker to finish loading taconite under the shiploader. The Barker would eventually bark her way out of the Zenith City at 21:44, allowing the Miner to take her place. Arthur M. Anderson may be next at the dock after the Miner; she shifted from C. Reiss to CN-Hallett Dock 5 around 17:00. It is possible she may also be loading blast furnace trim or unloading another portion of her limestone cargo. Edgar B. Speer finally cast off from Clure Public Marine Terminal Berth 4 after undergoing lengthy engine repairs in port. She was slowly sailing down the bay towards Superior as of late Friday night. Her 1,000-foot fleetmate Presque Isle is still being serviced at Fraser Shipyards.
