Port Reports – July 21, 2023

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Steamer Philip R. Clarke departed Duluth at 21:26 (Central) Wednesday evening with Minntac pellets for US Steel’s Gary Works. There was no other traffic in the Duluth entry until the Joseph L. Block departed the next day at 16:10 with a partial load of blast furnace trim from Hallett Dock 5. As of Thursday late afternoon, Paul R. Tregurtha was still taking a delay at Port Terminal berths 8 and 9 while Federal Montreal was unloading Turkish cement at Ash Grove. John G. Munson was expected to arrive Thursday early evening with limestone from Cedarville for Hallett Dock 5; they should be shifting to load iron ore pellets at CN#6 before departing. According to the latest schedules, Paul R. Tregurtha should be shifting to SMET Thursday evening, which means a Friday mid-morning departure.

Superior Entry
Tim S. Dool departed Superior at 04:34 (Central) Thursday morning with Hibtac pellets for Hamilton. As of Thursday late afternoon, no vessels were in port on the Superior side. Although BNSF was quiet all-day Thursday, another back-up of vessels is expected over the next few days. CSL Laurentien is expected to arrive and load Hibtac pellets for Quebec City early Friday morning. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. will either anchor or visit Lakehead Pipeline later in the morning before loading Keetac pellets for Conneaut. CSL Tadoussac will arrive and anchor late morning, waiting to load for Nanticoke. Finally, Spruceglen will arrive and anchor late Friday waiting to load for Quebec City.

Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
American Integrity was outbound from the shiploader with a destination of Conneaut. Inbound the Keweenaw for Two Harbors are the Michipcoten and the CSL Tadoussac. Michipicoten could almost be loaded before the CSL Tadoussac arrives.

Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Coming off a hot streak to start the week, Thunder Bay now appears to be in a bit of a slump. For the third day in a row, the harbor would welcome just a single vessel inbound the piers with a solitary departure to match. Federal Ruhr would be Friday’s arrival, entering port at 4:50 for Thunder Bay Terminals. Leaving from G3 much later in the day was Algoma Equinox; the head of her class cleared at 21:54 en route to Québec City, QC. Things figure to pick up again soon.

Blacky remains at Keefer Terminal, and Osogovo continues soaking up the summer sun out on the lake.

Marquette, MI – Noah H.
As is often the case, Interlake vessels filled up the schedule at LS&I docks on Thursday. It kicked off early with the 01:29 arrival of the Hon. James L. Oberstar, coming from the western part of the lake (Duluth) as she does a handful of times per season. As the Oberstar started getting chutes of ore on the south dock, her fleet mate Lee A. Tregurtha arrived at the north dock at 03:14. This might have slowed down the latter’s load time, as the Oberstar departed at 09:29 for Detroit while the LAT didn’t even leave on Thursday. Once she does, the Joseph L. Block will replace her, and eventually the Victory/Maumee sometime after.

Grand Haven, MI – Noah H.
Algoma Intrepid made her second visit of the season at 08:46, bringing salt from Goderich to the Verplank dock. It would be a short unload, with the workhorse vessel heading off to Brevort at 15:35. Later on, Calumet would sneak in just before the bell at 23:42 with aggregate from Indiana Harbor to unload at Verplank.

Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
Steamer Alpena, always sporting a summer tan, arrived with the usual cement at the usual Holcim dock at 03:02, much to the chagrin of Muskegon boat watchers. Her departure at 14:09 was much more conducive to the average person’s schedule, so that was nice of her. As is typically the case, Alpena finished off the last of her cement cargo (previous partial unload in Green Bay) and was off to her namesake port to reload.

Monroe, MI – Bill Kloss
Interlake’s Mesabi Miner arrived to unload coal at DTE.

Toledo, OH – Bill Kloss
Algoma Mariner departed for Port Daniel, PQ.

Marblehead, OH – Bill Kloss
Defiance/Ashtabula departed for Fairport Harbor. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder loaded at Holcim and left for Lorain. Mark W. Barker arrived from Cleveland for a third load of stone. She had to wait for her fleetmate to clear before proceeding to the dock.

Cleveland, OH – Bill Kloss
The saltie Finnborg arrived at the Port. She’s berthed at Dock 24W to unload steel coils and plates. Mark W. Barker departed for Marblehead once empty at West 3rd St. McKeil Spirit arrived to unload at Lehigh Cement.

Fairport Harbor, OH – Bill Kloss
Victory/Maumee unloaded at Osborne and left for Marquette, MI.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The Alicudi was done unloading on the night of July 19 and departed bow-out to the lake from the Holcim terminal at 21:00 with the tug Vermont back aft to check the stern swing.

The CSL Niagara was done taking on coal at Gateway Metroport in Lackawanna on the early morning of July 20 and departed without tugs via the South Entrance, bound for Nanticoke.

Buffalo, NY – Bill Kloss
NACC Alicudi left for Bath, ON.

Nanticoke, ON – Bill Kloss
Algocanada and Algoterra are loading at Imperial Oil. CSL Niagara arrived with coal from Buffalo to unload at Stelco. Algosea arrived late Wednesday morning and anchored off of Port Dover. The Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin was a late evening arrival with ore for Stelco.
