Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
With 30,000 tons of Keetac pellets bound for Stelco’s Lake Erie Works, Frontenac pulled away from BNSF Dock 5 in the middle of the night and cleared the Superior piers at 03:13, headed to Nanticoke to deliver her cargo. The rising summer sun over Lake Superior would soon greet the inbound footer American Integrity, arriving Duluth beneath a patented Zenith City sunrise at 05:48 for a load of coal at SMET. Rare visitor Radcliffe R. Latimer was also due at the dock but anchored off the piers shortly after 08:00 to wait for the Integrity to finish loading. Algoma Central’s veteran was soon joined at anchor by unique Dutch saltie Maxima, continuing her North American tour with a stop at the head of the lakes. The Wagenborg newbuild is due to make her much-anticipated arrival after Polsteam’s Iryda finishes loading at Gavilon. Afternoon traffic included the Duluth arrivals of Mesabi Miner for taconite pellets at CN Dock 6 and Federal Kushiro for Berth 2 of the port terminal with 10,000 bags of barite from Antalya, Turkey. Kushiro joins her fleetmate Federal Churchill in port; the latter is still discharging cement at Ash Grove a few berths to the south. The Integrity and Latimer would switch places under one bridge lift just before 19:00 in the midst of a concert at Bayfront Festival Park. The 1,000-footer is headed for St. Clair and Monroe with 68,000 tons of coal, while the Canadian visitor is taking on a smaller load of 25,000 tons of petroleum coke. Concluding the day was Rt. Hon.
