Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Waking up the neighborhood with a 01:30 salute, Indiana Harbor arrived Duluth early Friday morning bound for CN Dock 6 and a load of taconite pellets. At 06:58, Paul R. Tregurtha departed SMET with a split load of coal for St. Clair (38,000 tons) and Monroe (30,000 tons). Just as she followed the Paul R. inbound Duluth on Thursday evening, the Lee A. Tregurtha would once again find herself in the wake of the Queen on departure, only this time by a little over three hours. She cleared the piers outbound for the second time in as many days at 10:14. After being forced to turn around for further repairs at Fraser Shipyards on Thursday, the 80-year-old veteran will hopefully have an uneventful trip to Marquette on her second attempt. Back in the Duluth Harbor, the 70-year-old Arthur M. Anderson shifted from the C. Reiss Coal Co. dock up the St. Louis Bay for CN-Hallett Dock 5 around 10:45. The classic laker will be loading a cargo of blast furnace trim for delivery to one of the lower lakes. Indiana Harbor departed with Minntac pellets for Gary at 20:44, and fleetmate American Century was inbound for SMET and an identical load to the Paul R. Tregurtha just before midnight. A third ASC footer, American Spirit, remains tied up at Enbridge taking a delay on the Superior side of the harbor.
Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
Walter J. McCarthy Jr. departed Two Harbors on June 9 at 20:40 for Indiana Harbor. Due Two Harbors on June 10 is the Mesabi Miner at approximately 20:45.
Houghton, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Houghton received its first cruise ship of the season Friday in American Queen Voyages’ 286-foot Ocean Navigator. The Navigator would arrive at 06:36 and tie up on the Houghton side of the Portage Canal, where tourists went ashore for a day in the city. Early in the afternoon, USCGC Hollyhock sailed through the area while conducting annual aids to navigation operations in the Keweenaw Waterway. Ocean Navigator and her passengers set sail for Duluth at 16:15, but the vessel is expected to visit Houghton once again later this summer. Cruise ship Viking Octantis, scheduled to be the first cruise vessel of the season back in May, was forced to abort the trip due to weather conditions.
Marquette, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
On Thursday, June 9, cruise ship Ocean Navigator arrived Marquette’s Lower Harbor at 06:10 and docked alongside the Ellwood A. Mattson Lower Harbor Park. This is the first of several scheduled cruise ship visits to Marquette this summer. With her passengers aboard after exploring the area, the Navigator departed for Houghton at 20:58.
On Friday, Kaye E. Barker arrived at 21:02 for the Shiras dock with a load of limestone. This is at least her second visit to the facility with stone so far this season.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Joshua Hebeisen
Calumet Harbor, IL: Around midnight on Thursday, June 9, Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson arrived and meandered down the Calumet River for Middle River Marine. The next traffic would be later that evening at 22:39, when Ebroborg left Iroquois Landing Lakefront Terminal for Windsor. The VanEnkvort and her barge were hot on saltie’s heels and departed 15 minutes later for Calcite. On June 10, Manitowoc made port at 00:06 and proceeded to the KCBX South Terminal farther down the river. Bradshaw McKee/St. Marys Conquest arrived at 16:30 for the St. Marys Cement Chicago Terminal, and Manitowoc was outbound for Alpena 30 minutes later.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Grand River Navigation’s river-class vessel Manitowoc departed from the northern portion of Dock 7H en route to Grand Haven just before midnight on June 8. Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 weighed anchor in the inner harbor, taking the Manitowoc’s place at the dock in the wee hours of June 9. The pair would depart for Alpena at 11:01, and Joseph L. Block arrived for Indiana Harbor West at 01:07 on the 10th.
Gary, IN: Great Lakes Fleet’s John G. Munson arrived at 08:13 on June 9 and backed in to unload at U.S. Steel’s Gary Works.
Burns Harbor, IN: The vessel Burns Harbor arrived the port Burns Harbor at 19:27 on June 9, bound for her usual berth at the Cleveland-Cliffs dock. Polsteam saltie Narie departed FMT Burns Harbor at 21:40 for Milwaukee, Joseph L. Block cleared the breakwater at 23:05 for Indiana Harbor at 23:05, and Federal Leda remains docked at the Metro Ports terminal.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Intrepid cleared at 03:36 early on Friday upbound for Muskegon, MI with salt. Algoma Innovator had arrived at 02:08 to load at Compass Minerals.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Arrivals were Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader at 04:12 and Victory/Maumee at 18:08. Once empty, Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader left for Stoneport at 20:00. Still in port are Miedwie, Algoma Transport, and Herbert C. Jackson.
Marblehead, OH: Cuyahoga arrived at 08:21 to load at Holcim. She left at 11:37 for a second trip to Kingsville.
Kingsville, ON: Cuyahoga unloaded and departed at 04:51 for a return to Marblehead. She returned with a second stone delivery to Southwestern Sales Co. at 14:57, unloaded, and departed at 19:52.
Lorain, OH: Defiance/Ashtabula left at 09:31 for Meldrum Bay.
Cleveland, OH: Departures were Algoma Buffalo at 13:03 with salt for Johnstown, McKeil Spirit for Picton at 17:16, and Federal Freedom for Thunder Bay at 18:44. Petite Forte/St. Marys Cement were late-night arrivals. Still in port are Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II and Peyton Lynn C.
Conneaut, OH: Presque Isle is at the P&C dock.
Nanticoke, ON: Edwin H. Gott left for Two Harbors at 12:58.
