Munising, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Sheltered in Munising Bay on the southern shores of Lake Superior, the Neenah paper mill only receives about two deliveries of coal per shipping season. Might as well make them count, and the first shipment of the year did just that with an appearance by Mark W. Barker, the freshest face on the freshwater seas. Arriving in the wee hours of the morning, the Mark Bark departed before noon on Tuesday after unloading coal from Toledo, OH, overnight. It will be interesting to see if she comes back with another load in the fall.
Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
Calumet arrived at 2152 on Sunday evening, and would be well on her way by 0900 the next morning. Kaye Barker arrived after the Calumet cleared the port.
Manitowoc, WI – Connor Siemers
The 1953 built M/V Saginaw (former John J Boland) was inbound Tuesday to Manitowoc, Wisconsin to unload grain for Briess Malt. She becomes the first vessel to unload its cargo in Briess Tower this season.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Andrew Meyer
South Chicago, IL: The Samuel De Champlain cleared S Chicago at an unknown time for Benton Harbor. Mitiq still remains moored at the mouth of the Calumet River, but now shows Montreal as a destination on AIS.
Indiana Harbor, IN: Shuttle runs by the Wilfred Sykes has been the only action in the last 24 hours. She arrived early Monday and departed her departure at 1319, only to arrive neighboring Burns Harbor two hours later. Her fleetmate Joseph L. Block has been in port since early Sunday morning.
Gary, IN: After a short hiatus, Gary welcomed the Edgar B. Speer at 1044 on Monday. A bevy of traffic is expected later in the week, with visits from the Walter J. McCarthy Jr, John J. Boland, Edwin H. Gott, and John G. Munson before the end of the week.
Burns Harbor, IN: Federal Frontier arrived Burns at 1030 sharp on Saturday. Wilfred Sykes made port at 1512 on Monday afternoon. The Burns Harbor is expected on Tuesday evening around 2000.
Manistee, MI – Chris Franckowiak
Tug William C. Selvick arrived Manistee Monday evening and spent the night at the Manistee Municipal Marina slip behind the Elks. The tug is owned by the Great Lakes Towing Company and leased to the Great Lakes Maritime Academy of Traverse City. The tug was on a training trip from Traverse City to Milwaukee, WI. The tug has a compliment of 10 sailors, who visited the North Channel Brewing Company for dinner. She continued on her journey at 6 AM on 6/13/23.
Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
The two active AAAs of the Great Lakes Fleet called on Calcite recently. Philip R. Clarke was in town on Sunday after a morning arrival. She’d be out the door early AM on Monday, unfortunately before her sister ship made port at 1347. In the meantime, H. Lee White arrived at 0710.
Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Conveyor cleared 01:51 Monday downbound for Cote St Catherines with salt. Algoma Buffalo cleared 05:24 Tuesday downbound for Hamilton with salt. Algoma Compass arrived at 05:31 and loaded at Compass Minerals. Compass’ 11th appearance here this season.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
June 12
Toledo, OH: CSL Niagara loaded coal and left for Hamilton, ON. Also leaving was Evans Spirit. Algoma Transport is at CSX. Manitowoc arrived from Cleveland to load at CSX.
Kingsville, ON: Manitoulin delivered stone to Southwestern Sales Co.
Sandusky, OH: Herbert C. Jackson arrived to load coal at Norfolk Southern
Cleveland, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed with salt for Detroit and Manitowoc left for Toledo. Aujac is at the Port. Flevoborg was a late night arrival to the Port.
Ashtabula, OH: Herbert C. Jackson delivered stone to Kinder Morgan then departed to Sandusky once empty.
Conneaut, OH: John J. Boland was reported as going to Buffalo but hadn’t updated her AIS. Instead the Boland is on her way to Gary, IN.
Nanticoke, ON: McAsphalt Marine tug and barge Leo A. McArthur/John J. Carrick arrived at Imperial Oil to load petroleum products.
June 13
Toledo, OH: Manitowoc departed with coal for Manistee. Algoma Transport is loading at CSX.
Sandusky, OH: Herbert C. Jackson loaded coal and departed for Zug Island. Manitoulin then arrived under the loader. Once her holds were full of the black diamonds, she departed for Essar Steel at the Soo.
Cleveland, OH: With much fanfare, the City of Cleveland welcomed the cruise ship Viking Polaris to the Port. She is at Dock 28W. This is the first visit of a Viking ship to Cleveland. Tour buses were picking up passengers to take them to various locations in Northeast Ohio. Back to load salt at Cargill is Interlake’s Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder. She departed for Milwaukee once loaded. At the Port is Aujac at Dock 22E and Flevoborg at Dock 24W.
Nanticoke, ON: Leo A. McArthur/John J. Carrick departed with petroleum products for Sorel-Tracy, QC.
