Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
June 17th was an incredible day on (and above) Buffalo Harbor. CSL Niagara arrived from Hamilton for the Gateway Metroport Main Dock around 10AM. On their way in past Point Abino, a big twin-engine US Navy P-8 Poseidon aircraft overflew the ship at 2,000 feet on their way to the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Base. The Niagara came in through the piers, winded in the Outer Harbor, and backed up the Lackawanna Canal to tie up at the bulk apron about half way down to take on a load of coal. About 45 minutes later, American Mariner got underway stern first for the lake from the Frontier Elevator. As she backed into the Outer Harbor Northern Channel to wind, the US Navy Blue Angels showed up on scene to do their practice runs for the Thunder on the Buffalo Waterfront air show this coming weekend. The ship was buzzed multiple times by the twin-engined F-18 fighter jets at low level and high speed as they made pass after pass and with the firetug Cotter there spraying water from her monitors. It was one heck of a sight see!
