Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
It was a slow day in the Twin Ports, with all boat traffic wrapping up early Tuesday morning. There was no large vessel activity whatsoever on the Minnesota side of the harbor, an unusual occurrence in the summer months. At 00:48, Burns Harbor cleared the Superior Entry with 60,000 tons of Hibtac pellets for the Cleveland-Cliffs blast furnace in Burns Harbor. Samuel de Champlain/Innovation departed Superior light at 06:40 after discharging cement alongside the idled J.A.W. Iglehart, concluding all passages for the remainder of the day. As is typically the case for vessels visiting Lafarge Superior, the Champlain and her barge entered Duluth on arrival and left port through Superior to eliminate the need to turn around in the inner basin. They are due next in Alpena to load more cement for delivery to the lower lakes. Lee A. Tregurtha is the only vessel in the harbor as of Tuesday night; the 80-year-old veteran should be departing any day from Fraser Shipyards to begin her 2022-2023 season.
