Port Reports – March 20, 2023

St. Marys River – Joshua Hebeisen
In what has become somewhat of a morning routine, a trio of U.S. Coast Guard cutters — Katmai Bay, Biscayne Bay, and Mackinaw — left the Lime Island dock around 10:00 to conduct ice operations on the river. Katmai would venture all the way up to Sault Ste. Marie, MI, arriving at 12:18 and tying up kitty-corner to USCGC Biscayne Bay at the Coast Guard dock. Across the way, empty tanker Algonova was all set to depart Purvis Marine and would set off down the river at 13:39. Biscayne was on hand a few miles to the south and would escort the ‘Nova all the way to Lime. The tanker would complete the rest of her St. Marys voyage with a Mackinaw assist before entering the open waters of Lake Huron bound for Nanticoke, ON.

Calumet Harbor, IL – Joshua Hebeisen
A ways downstream and around the bend of the Calumet River, Samuel de Champlain/Innovation cast off from Holcim (not St. Marys Cement, as my previous two reports erroneously stated) around 06:00 and began the 3-hour journey north towards Lake Michigan. The pair is currently hugging the lake’s western shore on their way to Green Bay, WI, likely with a cargo of cement slag.

Port Huron, MI – Sarnia, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Algoterra shifted up from the lower dock to the specialty products dock around 11:30, later departing Sarnia for Nanticoke, ON, at 18:09. Fleetmate Algosea was left behind all by herself at Imperial Oil, though fellow tanker Iver Bright is keeping her company farther down the river.

Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
With the season’s first load of coal put ashore at DTE’s EES Coke, Dirk S. VanEnkvort/Michigan Trader pulled out from Zug Island and departed south for Toledo, OH, at 20:45. An hour later, Leo A. McArthur/John J. Carrick cast off from their winter berth at Sterling Fuels for the short trip north to Sarnia, ON.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Cleveland, OH: Harvest Spirit arrived after being at anchor off of Sandusky. She has steel coils loaded in Sault Ste. Marie, ON to be unloaded at Dock 24W at the Port of Cleveland.
