Port Reports – March 25, 2023

Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
American Mariner departed Duluth under the Northern lights at 23:31 (Central) Thursday night with iron ore pellets destined for Cliffs’ Cleveland mill. As of Friday night, all is quiet on the Duluth side. Joseph L. Block is expected to be Duluth’s first lower lakes arrival Sunday morning bound for the CN ore dock.

No traffic has taken place in Superior yet this season! As of Friday night, American Spirit was still wintering at Elevator M. The first lower lakes arrival should be American Integrity Sunday early morning; Stewart J. Cort and CSL St. Laurent will most likely anchor off Superior to wait.

Two Harbors, MN – Silver Bay, MN – Gary Putney
Like the Superior entry, Two Harbors has yet to see any action! Edwin H. Gott, first through the Soo Locks for 2023, will be arriving late Saturday night or early Sunday morning for the first ore-load. Great Republic and CSL Laurentien will be next to load sometime Sunday.

Marquette, MI – Arthur Pickering
The Lee Tregurtha arrived at the ore dock early this morning becoming the first vessel of the season here in Marquette.  She departed the ore dock this afternoon and will probably be the first southbound vessel through the Soo Locks.  As of this report, three other vessels are enroute to Marquette.  The John Boland is currently at the Soo Locks waiting its turn to transit up-bound through the locks and should arrive late Saturday.   Meanwhile, the Joseph Thompson is approaching the south end of the St. Mary’s River from Lake Huron and should arrive in Marquette early Sunday.  Finally, the Great Lakes Trader is steaming toward the south end of the St. Mary’s River from Lake Michigan and should also arrive here in Marquette early Sunday.

Burns Harbor, IN – Andrew Meyer
Wilfred Sykes’ first transit of her 74th season of operation is complete, after her arrival in Burns around 1315 local time.

Goderich, ON – Bruce Douglas
Algoma Guardian (winter layup here) cleared 11:54 Friday downbound in ballast for Sarnia.

Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Monroe, MI: Leonard M/Huron Spirit arrived to unload steel coils at the Port dock. New York/Double Skin 509A and James R. Barker remain in port.
Toledo, OH: Paul R. Tregurtha departed for Superior, WI and another season of coal loads. Algoma Transport is loading at CSX. Still anchored are Sam Laud and CSL Assiniboine. Samuel deChamplain/Innovation was an evening arrival to unload at Holcim.
Sandusky, OH: Kaye E. Barker arrived for coal at Norfolk Southern.
Cleveland, OH: Prentiss Brown/St.Marys Challenger docked at the St.Marys Columbus St. terminal, unloaded and departed for Toledo. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder is on the shuttles.
Ashtabula, OH: The tug and barge Defiance/Ashtabula departed layup and is headed to Two Harbors, MN.
Nanticoke, ON: Algosea departed with petroleum products for Sarnia.
