Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Scott Bjorklund
Duluth Entry
Interlake’s Hon. James L. Oberstar started Monday’s busy traffic, arriving at 04:07 (Central) with limestone from Holcim quarries at Stoneport and Meldrum Bay for CN-Hallett #5. James R. Barker departed at 06:31 with iron ore pellets for Cleveland; Algoma Discovery arrived at 06:45 to take Barker’s place at CN. Steamer Arthur M. Anderson arrived at 09:44 with limestone for CN-Hallett #5. American Century arrived at 12:39 to fuel then load low sulfur coal at SMET. Hon. James L. Oberstar departed empty for Marquette at 18:38. Finally, Edwin H. Gott departed at 20:20 empty for Two Harbors.
As of Monday night, Arthur M. Anderson was unloading at CN-Hallett #5 while Algoma Discovery was loading at CN#6. Arthur M. Anderson is estimated to depart early Tuesday morning empty for Two Harbors. American Century is also estimated to depart early-morning, but with coal. Algoma Discovery may depart sometime Tuesday morning or afternoon. Mesabi Miner is expected Tuesday evening for CN#6.
Superior Entry
John J. Boland finally departed Fraser early Monday to first fuel then shift over to BNSF. They departed at 20:03 (Central) Monday evening with iron ore pellets for Burns Harbor. As of Monday night, American Century was the only vessel in port on the Superior side (loading at SMET). Stewart J. Cort is expected early Tuesday to load at BNSF; once they depart, Burns Harbor will be loading next.
Two Harbors, MN – Gary Putney
Philip R. Clarke arrived Two Harbors at 21:25 Sunday and she departed at 05:00 on Monday for the Gary Works.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
On Saturday the 20th (barely), the Joseph L. Block arrived at 01:56 to load ore with a few rarities. First, she came from the west since she unloaded stone at Duluth/Superior, which is somewhat uncommon. Second, the Block itself is extremely rare at Marquette; this appears to be her first visit since about this time in 2020. The Block party would conclude at 18:14 with her departure for Indiana Harbor. In between the Block’s passing times, the Victory/Maumee made another visit. The Block has a long way to go if she wants to catch up in Marquette visits with the busy tug/barge duo. Their arrival at 07:28 was followed by a 20:42 departure for Toledo. No traffic would follow for Sunday and Monday, though the Interlake cavalry is coming; Kaye E. Barker, Herbert C. Jackson, and Hon. James L. Oberstar are all expected, in that order, in the coming days.
Holland, MI – Noah H.
The newly-cleared entryway of Holland means traffic can once again flow through everyone’s favorite Dutch-sounding port. The first arrival since December of 2022 belonged to the Great Republic, coming in at 18:21 on Saturday the 20th to unload stone from Port Inland. At 04:06 the next morning, the floating pyramid headed back to Port Inland to finish off the first visit of the season. She was immediately replaced by Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 at 05:57, which finished off at 23:50. The next laker would be the Manitowoc on 22nd, arriving at 04:03 to unload at both Verplank and Brewer’s City Dock. Manitowoc Monday, like all good things, came to an end at 12:32 after the river-class vessel backed out of her slip and departed for Port Inland.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson arrived Muskegon at 11:07. Yes, this is the right port listing. It’s believed to be the first ever visit for the tug boat, which pushed its cargo of stone to Cobb Verplank to unload. The less-than-once-in-a-blue-moon event concluded at 21:56 with a departure for Stoneport. Here’s hoping it won’t be quite so long before the next visit. Additionally, Algoma Intrepid arrived at 19:29 to unload salt at the Verplank salt dock. It’s the young ship’s first arrival of the year after making 4 trips in rapid succession last season. She should leave for another salt run by the morning.
Lake Erie Ports – Bill Kloss
Toledo, OH: Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader departed for Calcite. Victory/Maumee arrived later in the evening and went to the Torco dock.
Marblehead, OH: Manitoulin departed with stone for Windsor.
Sandusky, OH: CSL Niagara arrived to load coal.
Cleveland, OH: Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder departed for Marblehead and Edenborg left for Chicago.
Ashtabula, OH: Lee A. Tregurtha arrived with stone for the Pinney dock. She left for Toledo once empty. Sam Laud was next to arrive, bringing stone from Calcite to the Pinney dock.
Nanticoke, ON: CSL Niagara departed for Sandusky. Algocanada arrived to load at Imperial Oil.
Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The NACC Alicudi departed for Bath at 09:00 with the tug Vermont checking her stern.
