Pelee Passage – Joshua Hebeisen
In a scary situation on Lake Erie late Tuesday night, veteran laker Cuyahoga issued a distress call after experiencing an engine room fire en route to Kingsville. The 80-year-old Maritimer came to a stop north of Pelee Island and just 10 nautical miles southeast of the breakwaters she had been headed for. Search and rescue vessels CCGS Cape Dundas, Colchester Guardian, and CG45756 sped to the area to assist, as did an airborne USCG MH-65 Dolphin helicopter. Nearby lakers Indiana Harbor and Radcliffe R. Latimer were also called to the scene. According to the United States Coast Guard, the crew of the Cuyahoga was able to contain the fire using onboard CO2 suppression systems. No injuries were reported, though the extent of damage to the vessel was unknown as of Tuesday night. The Latimer was cleared to continue her journey to Port-Daniel, QC, at around midnight.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The South Buffalo Railroad was delivering all kinds of cut limestone blocks to Gateway Metroport for the upcoming breakwall repairs during May. They had gondola cars spotted along the siding near the Union Ship Canal dock with three different sizes of them. A mobile crane was unloading the cars and placing the rocks in sorted-out piles. Eventually, they will be loaded into barges when Ryba Marine comes back to finish what they started last year in the Outer Harbor.

The American Mariner finished up at the Frontier elevator and backed out for the lake by herself at 00:30 on the 23rd. She winded in the Outer Harbor with the thrusters and then headed up the lake, bound for Calcite, MI.
