Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The tug Duluth arrived in Dunkirk harbor from the Welland Canal with a consort of a couple barges worth of construction equipment on the night of the 13th. They tied up at the public pier there to hide for about a day from some expected bad weather. There were 2 barge sections, both made up of flexi-float segments, one was a deck barge with an excavator & the other was an equipment barge. They had the aft section tied off at the end of the public pier with the spuds on the bow of the deck barge holding them in place up forward. Dunkirk is a nice little harbor to sit it out a storm with a solid pier, all new apron with bollards, and a long breakwall. This was the 1st time I saw any kind of a boat there since the early ’00 era when the coal ships were still coming in for NRG.
Calumet arrived with a load of sand for Canadian Silica on the 14th around 6PM and ran right into a squall coming over the area from Canada. A line of heavy thunderstorms made them turn back from their approach and they did a “weather pattern” off the North Entrance Channel for about a half hour before coming in. They made their way up the Buffalo River and City Ship Canal before arriving off the unloading apron around 7:30PM. About an hour later the large tug Manitou arrived at the North Entrance and tied up at Seaway Pier #1 on the Outer Harbor with a brand new barge from Don Jon shipyard in Erie, PA. She was the first deep draft vessel to moor there since the railcar ferry Landsdowne back in 1999.
Calumet was done unloading at Canadian Silica and backed out by herself for the lake around 3:30AM on the 15th. She winded in the Outer Harbor Northern Channel and headed up the lake for Fairport, Ohio around 4:15AM. The Manitou spent the night at Seaway Piers and then backed her barge into the Outer Harbor around 7AM. They then headed down the Black Rock Canal for Tonawanda. About 5 minutes after the Manitou cleared the piers in the Outer Harbor, the Army Corps tug Cheraw came up the Outer Harbor pushing her derrick boat McCauley ahead. They did some wooden debris removal from the culverts above the Ferry St. bridge in the Black Rock Canal. The Manitou continued down to the lock, and then dropped off her barge near the entrance to the Erie Canal in Tonawanda. A small NYS Canal Corp. tug came out to get it and they made the exchange around 10AM. The Cheraw was done with her work at the Power Authority dock and went back to Lackawanna. The Manitou then followed her back up about an hour later, clearing Buffalo bound for Port Huron, Michigan light tug around 11:45AM.
American Mariner arrived for the Frontier Elevator with wheat from Duluth at 4PM. She went up the Buffalo River and City Ship Canal without assistance and will probably be departing Thursday morning.
