Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
In fitting Halloween fashion, an inky-black night in the Twin Ports gave way to a brilliant orange as the sun rose on the 31st. While still under the cover of darkness, Arthur M. Anderson shifted from the CN 6 gravity dock over to the east facing of the pier. Her holds already trim with BFT from CN-Hallett 5 suggested that she may have been undergoing repairs or other port services at her owner’s dock. The move made room at the shiploader for the incoming James R. Barker, coming off the lake like a giant monster in the night just before 02:00 for iron ore pellets. As the sky continued to lighten in the early-morning hours, Radcliffe R. Latimer topped off with petroleum coke at Midwest Energy (SMET) and got underway around 07:00. She would clear the Duluth Ship Canal just as a fiery sun broke the horizon to cast the big lake in a pretty pumpkin orange. The Latimer’s next destination remains a mystery, and her AIS only lists “Port”… spooky. Mark W. Barker soon cast off from her berth at Fraser Shipyards and backed in at the nearby SMET to take on a load of coal of her own, her bright pilothouse searchlight combing the waters like a specter in the night. The Anderson departed Duluth for Gary at 12:57 and was soon followed out by the Barker – destined for Toledo – a little over an hour later. A hiatus in ship traffic the rest of the day gave boatnerds a chance to relax and hit the town for some trick-or-treating.
There has been no traffic arriving or departing via the Superior Entry as of late, though that is scheduled to change starting early Tuesday morning with a backup of multiple footers. Things are expected to heat up on the Duluth side of the harbor in the days to come as well.
Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
The Wilfred Sykes made another of her frequent visits to Port Inland at 0851 Sunday morning. Roughly 12 hours later, she’d be outbound with her customary load from Carmeuse, destined for Indiana Harbor. At 0044, American Mariner rolled into town. As of mid-afternoon Monday, she was still under the loader.

Thessalon, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
American Courage came in at 08:00 for a quick four-hour load, topping off what was already in her holds from the Meldrum Bay quarry. She was out by noon for Cleveland.
Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
The Courage had set off for Thessalon to the north around 04:15, allowing the anchored Atlantic Huron to pick up anchor nearby and trade places at the loader. She had cleared the Mississagi Strait at 19:00 en route to Nanticoke. Cuyahoga was next inbound at 23:20 to wrap up what was a busy day for the dock.

Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
John D. Leitch arrived at 07:15 to load stone, departing later in the evening for Windsor at 21:30.
Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
Three classic lakers called on Calcite over the weekend; 2/3 of the triple deckers on the lakes were part of that trifecta. John G. Munson arrived at 0737 Sunday morning, the old Bradley boat picking up another load of stone for the Rouge River, a fairly frequent destination for her stone loads. H. Lee White would make her departure at 1101. The Lee A. Tregurtha would arrive at 2042, and the Munson would leave shortly after midnight on Monday morning. The Tregurtha would make her exit at 1207 on Halloween for Buffington. Michipicoten arrived at 0819 on Monday morning. Philip R. Clarke is due for her weekly visit late Halloween night.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Kaye E. Barker was up and at ’em bright and early (minus the bright) just minutes into Monday morning with a 00:09 departure for Sandusky. The previous day had seen her come in with another load for the Dearborn Works, and she should be back with coal on Tuesday. After a rare trip to Windsor to unload at Lafarge, Philip R. Clarke shifted across the international divide around 03:10 to fuel up at Mistersky before departing for Calcite at 05:32. On her way in from Calcite three hours later was H. Lee White; she took up an unloading position in the lower River Rouge and remained there Monday night. Rand’s river-class Calumet concluded a visit to Windsor Salt midmorning and shifted up to fuel at Mistersky at 09:45. Her eventual departure for Milwaukee clocked in at just after noon. Samuel de Champlain/Innovation would in the meantime pull away from Holcim downbound for Toledo to continue her latest cement delivery tour; fellow ATB Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader pulled up for fuel as Calumet bid farewell. The tug/barge are headed next to Stoneport and continued the upbound journey at 14:27. Algoma Niagara (or perhaps just Algoma Conveyor in costume) put the finishing touches on Halloween night with a 21:16 arrival for the east side of Zug Island, a rare occurrence.
