Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
RETURN OF THE KING: The Distinguished Honorable Interlake Steamship Company Fleet Captain Moosey Smith returned to the Twin Ports early Tuesday morning, heralded inbound the Superior piers at 01:09 to the sound of trumpets (Boatnerd’s independent sources are unable to confirm). After flawlessly guiding the vessel alongside the dock wall at BNSF, the hooved harbormaster ascended to his throne in the pilothouse and kept watch over the loading process throughout the remainder of the day. A lucky group of local photographers were given the opportunity to board the vessel and meet the master himself, during which he took a quick break from his ever-present duties to give a quick tour of the pilothouse and impress his subjects with the controls for the mighty Barker Bark.
In other (considerably less important) traffic, Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader arrived at 05:11 with limestone for Graymont hailing from the mines at Port Inland. Nearby tug/barge unit G.L. Ostrander/Integrity soon finished up discharging cement and, in an unusual move, proceeded to Fraser Shipyards midmorning for dry docking and a five-year inspection.
At 15:44, another Barker in port – this one of the Mark variety – pulled away from CN Dock 6 in the snow with a load of taconite pellets for Cleveland. She cleared beneath the Aerial Lift Bridge at 15:44 after crossing paths with Clyde/Trader in the inner harbor; the tug/barge combo was headed to the port terminal to fuel before departing themselves at 19:07 for a two hours’ trip to Two Harbors. American Spirit would also fuel upon a somewhat uncommon arrival via the Duluth Entry at 23:04. The footer is due next at BNSF after Captain Moosey is satisfied with his load.
See below for a video by Dan Mackey, one of Moosey’s guests, of the loading process at BNSF.
