Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
October 17 was dark and windy with heavy waves on the lake, so the captain on the tug New York decided to pull his barge DS509A into Buffalo Outer Harbor at 10:45AM to switch the tow around instead of doing it out in the rough water. They came in the North Entrance, stopped off Times Beach, headed south, dropped the tow line, and maneuvered down the starboard side back aft to the barge’s stern notch. After notching up, the tug turned her barge back around to starboard again facing north. Their assist tug Vermont was late getting down from Katherine St. due to a locked gate at their dock, so the New York loitered inside the break wall for just a few minutes. The city bridge tender helped them out by raising Ohio St. first, leaving it up, and then driving over to Michigan St. so the Vermont could keep it moving. Around 11:15AM they finally met up off the Erie Basin and the harbor pilot was transferred aboard. Vermont then escorted the New York down to the Suite Kote pier in Tonawanda.
