Duluth, MN Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Capping off the workweek was a busy day for Midwest Energy and only Midwest Energy, getting started early in the morning with Defiance/Ashtabula topping off an overnight load of petroleum coke at the SMET terminal in Superior. The tub and tug would soon get underway and clear the Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge bound for Alpena at 04:38. All three of the pair’s Twin Ports visits this season have now culminated in a departure with coal products. With the dock clear, classic Hon. James L. Oberstar left her rare anchorage position in the inner harbor and made an equallly-rare beeline to SMET, where the loading of a small 18,500 tons of coal into her holds commenced. The quick process was over by noon, which saw the laker cast off and head to Graymont to unload the cargo she had literally just loaded a little over two miles away… perhaps the Oberstar will start dabbling in the Grubhub business in the near future as well. Her eventual departure from Duluth at 21:06 marked the end of an amusing trip – albeit one she has made before – that saw the ex-Beeghly both arrive and depart empty. The laker is currently headed to Marquette, where her next load will most likely actually be leaving the harbor this time. Things wrapped up back in Duluth with a 22:03 Paul R. Tregurtha arrival for (you guessed it) Midwest Energy. A much more common occurrence indeed.

Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader departed from LS&I at 12:54, due next at Toledo to unload. The duo has been a more frequent visitor as of late. The CG vessel Spar also left on Friday, at 16:52. The port is empty and will remain that way until the Victory/Maumee arrives next, or the Hon. James L. Oberstar coming from Duluth/Superior. Both are on their way, coming from different ends of Superior.

Just a few months into her young career, Mark W. Barker has now scratched Esky off her bucket list with a rare trip to the C. Reiss dock for what were presumably repairs to her stern of some kind. The baby boat arrived around 03:00 and headed out at 21:02 to resume the intended voyage to Buffalo.

After making an unexpected visit on Thursday, the Manitowoc concluded a very short unload at Verplank in the early morning Friday, and was gone by 03:42. The gray-hulled river vessel headed out to Indiana Harbor next.

Muskegon, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
In the early morning Friday at 04:55, the Kaye E. Barker returned to Muskegon after consecutive Port Inland shuttle runs. She unloaded at B.C. Cobb Verplank before shifting over to the middle of the harbor at 15:00 to wait out winds. This is not the first time she has had to delay her departure from Muskegon for these reasons! Thankfully, the delay lasted several days less than earlier, and she was on her way to Port Inland once again just after midnight. Perhaps we will see a three-peat from the Barker in the coming day or two. Meanwhile, the American Mariner departed from Lakeside Verplank at 09:11, due next at Calcite. Finally, the G.L. Ostrander/Integrity continues to unload cement at Holcim before heading back to Alpena.
