Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Classic Interlake lakers are in abundance at Marquette. The relatively common Lee A. Tregurtha made an early morning arrival at 05:58 before departing at 13:20. She would be followed by the less common Herbert C. Jackson at 17:38. Herbie will be followed by the extremely common Hon. James L. Oberstar in the next day or so. Interlake vessels this year have a sort of ranking of who comes in the most, with three of the four candidates accounted for here. All four of those ships are outclassed in rarity by the upcoming Wednesday arrival of the American Courage, making her second visit in just a few weeks, but also her second of the year. Later in the year, these unusual routes can happen more frequently.
Sturgeon Bay, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
A groovy Tuesday morning in Sturgeon Bay saw Ashton Marine tugs Meredith Ashton and Candice Elise dancing with side-by-side Great Lakes Fleet veterans Roger Blough and Cason J. Callaway to the tune of the “BayShip Shuffle.” After the Callaway was moved out of the way to a nearby slip, the Blough – notably stripped of a variety of electrical equipment, including radar and whistles – was hauled out and docked farther south with her side against the wall in preparation for a reported tow on Wednesday. A February 2022 shipboard fire has left the vessel gutted and sitting idle for some time, leading to rumors about her future that were only fueled by Tuesday’s moves. While nothing has been publically confirmed, it is believed that the Blough will be towed to CN’s dock in Conneaut within the next few days for long-term layup.
Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
The Great Republic departed at 0711 on Monday morning. That would be it for the port until the Joseph L. Block at 1813 Monday evening. The Block would depart Tuesday morning at 0901 for Duluth/Superior, her first trip north in a couple weeks. The Block has spent a fair bit of time this fall on the same routes as the Sykes.

Chicago, IL: Arriving in time to cheer on the home team, the Federal Welland arrived mid afternoon on Monday and parked at the mouth of the Calumet River. Gary, IN: Gary has been quiet the last two days with the exception of the Edwin H. Gott, arriving at 0759 Tuesday. The Gott is already showing a destination of Duluth Superior, which would be an unusual run for her. Whether it is for CN, repairs, or BN5, she hasn’t made the run too often this season.

A fairly quiet couple weeks was interrupted by the presence of the Laura VanEnkevort and her WWII era consort, Joseph H. Thompson. She’d bring in the barge at 0540 and be out only five hours later, showing a destination of Calcite. This is the second time in the last several weeks that Drummond Island has seen a partial load getting topped off in Calcite.
