Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
An ASC footer-focused fall day in the Twin Ports began early in the morning courtesy of American Century and a 00:32 transit of the Duluth Ship Canal. Coal was on the menu yet again for the hungry giant, with 68,000 total tons – 38,000 for St. Clair and the remainder for Monroe – pouring into her seven massive stomachs throughout the morning. She would later cast off from Midwest Energy post-noon before clearing the piers at 13:35. Fleetmate Indiana Harbor was outbound earlier in the day with a full load of taconite pellets from CN Dock 6. The 02:40 departure saw the 1979-built boat set course next for the port of Indiana Harbor, a namesake which she has carried during her entire career on the lakes. The only other activity through the Duluth piers would be an unusual departure by G-tug Missouri at 15:51. The hope is that the tug, showing an AIS destination of Marquette, isn’t already sick of her new Twin Ports assignment after only a couple months on the job… Shoreside speculation is that she may be headed to pick up a construction barge.
A more unusual visitor to the Twin Ports began Sunday’s traffic farther south in Superior; Algoma Conveyor, bound for Hamilton, cleared with ore from BNSF just before 10:00. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. logged an entrance via Allouez Bay later in the evening (18:32) to take a delay at Elevator M. Though the Enbridge dock is typically used by ASC for these types of stops, it is currently slated to receive the injured American Spirit and her engine troubles early Monday morning.
Marquette, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The American Spirit had to change plans after having mechanical issues, and will arrive Duluth/Superior for repairs instead of loading at Marquette. In the meantime, Interlake’s Hon. James L. Oberstar and Lee A. Tregurtha will be making visits in that order over the next few days.
Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
Manitowoc departed at 1204 after a 30 hour stay in town At 1529, Great Republic would replace her at the dock. Great Republic would be the first traffic for October with a departure at 0252 on Saturday. Wilfred Sykes made an evening arrival at 1701 on Saturday. She’s on her way back from an irregular but highly appreciated trip to the lower lakes.
Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Andrew Meyer
Chicago, IL: An 1158 arrival on Friday and a departure at 0824 Saturday marked another regular trip for the Caroline McKee and Commander, who now are upbound for Charlevoix. Holland saw the Manitowoc arrive at 0602 on Saturday and depart eight hours later. Cuyahoga is due in Holland Sunday. Also due on Sunday is the passenger ship Hamburg.

10/2/22 Undaunted/PM41 arrived to load scrap metal at Padnos.
Holland, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
The always classic Cuyahoga made an appearance in the early morning Sunday at 01:34 to unload at (likely) both Verplank and Brewer’s City Dock. The Hog would depart at 12:32 to head up to Port Inland. The Great Lakes Fleet’s river vessel Great Republic appeared to follow the same routine (it should be noted that the movement of both vessels is not 100% clear) unloading at both docks before heading off to Port Dolomite. However, if the ‘D’ in dolomite is entered as a ‘C’, as was the case here, it would seem as though the Great Republic is traveling to Colom Port in Spain, which is less likely to happen. Finally, the Undaunted/Pere Marquette 41 arrived at 07:48 at Padnos to load scrap, departing at 18:39 for Burns Harbor.
Grand Haven, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Bradshaw McKee/St. Marys Conquest arrived at 05:58 to unload cement from Charlevoix at St. Marys. The tug and 85-year-old barge would make their way over to Milwaukee after departing at 14:52. Further ahead, it appears that the Manitowoc may be arriving on Monday, likely with aggregate from Indiana Harbor.
Muskegon, MI – Oggdo Bogdo
Cruise ship Le Dumont d’Urville made another visit at 07:45, allowing her passengers to explore the area until their departure at 18:15. Meanwhile, the Candace Elise remains at the Ashton Marine dock.
Bruce Mines, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Michipicoten departed for Windsor at 01:20.
Meldrum Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Fickle AIS coverage failed to pinpoint the exact time of departure for Lower Lakes Towing’s Saginaw, leaving Lafarge with a load of stone for Sarnia sometime in the early afternoon. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader were on hand to take the dock next.
Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Arriving at 17:30 to load was happy couple Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson.
Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
A busy 48 hours for Calcite has yielded four ships, three of which are classic lakers. After her 1022 arrival on Thursday, the Michipicoten made her departure at 1257 on Friday, She was replaced almost immediately at the dock by fleetmate Robert S. Pierson. The workhorse would make her departure at 2327 on Friday evening. On the other side of the slip, the Kaye E. Barker arrived at 1014 on Friday. She’d make her departure at 0409 on October 1. Philip R. Clarke arrived at 0420 and would subsequently spend 12 hours in town before rolling out, with another load of stone for Duluth/Superior.
Detroit, MI – Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Sunday morning began with a pair of upbound arrivals calling from Toledo, both of which stopped at Mistersky to fuel before proceeding north en route to their respective destinations. The first, Interlake footer James R. Barker, entered the waters of the Detroit River shortly before 02:00 before continuing to Two Harbors after 04:00. A one-hour hiatus passed before Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader pulled up to the pump and later resumed the voyage to the Twin Ports not long after 08:00. Arriving from Lake St. Clair in the meantime was classic Alpena, always a welcome sight and one that Detroit has been treated to on numerous occasions so far this season. After a partial unload along the Saginaw River, the rest of her cement cargo was to be emptied at the Motor City Holcim silos. CSL bulker Baie Comeau was one minute behind the steamer and went to Windsor’s Lafarge dock to unload stone; 19:00 saw her shift south for salt from the Ojibway Mine, once again lining up with Alpena as the cement carrier departed back upbound. Before noon, Herbert C. Jackson completed finished her business at Zug Island and spent the rest of the day taking a lengthy delay at the Nicholson terminal. Reestborg made an evening exit from ADM bound for Liverpool, CSL Tadoussac made port for Mistersky at 21:45, and Sam Laud was inbound from Sandusky before midnight. The latter appeared to tie up at the Carmeuse River Rouge Operation.

Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
The John Marshal departed Gateway Metroport in Lackawanna at 3:30AM on the 29th for Erie, PA with a load of windmill parts. Around 6:30AM the Boland was towed out of the Buffalo Ship Canal from CSI with the Vermont assisting. Possibly because of the bad stern thruster, she backed all the way out to the lake, dropping the Vermont at the Outer Harbor, before winding on her own off the breakwall. The Boland then departed for Toledo. The Vermont was back on scene at 12:30PM to assist the NACC Capri out from Holcim on their way back to Bath, Ont. to load more cement.
The John Marshal was back again with her barge Lake Trader at 1:44AM on September 30th for the Gateway Metroport Main Dock. They had a quick load out and were on their way up to Erie that afternoon, departing Lackawanna at 4:43PM
Next up will be the Mark W. Barker with more sand for CSI on Sunday the 2nd.
