Buffalo, NY – Brian Wroblewski
Ryba’s tug Kristen Joel departed Lackawanna and headed West around 4PM on the 30th. She was pushing two hopper barges and the derrick boat that they were using on the break wall repairs. The American Mariner arrived with wheat from Duluth for General Mills on October 1stat 12:00 Noon. She came straight in without tugs and tied up at the Frontier elevator to unload about a half hour later. After some intermittent delays, the Mariner was done unloading at 10AM on the 3rd. The ship slid down the pier towards the Skyway, secured there, and pulled the boom in while the deck gang washed down the holds. Around 10:45AM they were all set and she dropped lines for departure. The Mariner backed out by herself, winded in the Outer Harbor, and headed out onto a rainy lake Erie. Out near Windmill Point, they passed the inbound NACC Capri “on the one whistle”. The Capri then arrived in the North Entrance around 12 Noon to meet the tug Vermont off the lighthouse. The tug took a stern line and helped them wind the boat before starting their stern first tow up to LaFarge. Driving rain and fog made it slow going but they went up without any major problems. The Vermont dropped the tow line at the Brunet (Penn Dixie) dock and helped them get moored up by easing against the Port side. With a slight bit of pressure on her they were able to overcome the current and weather, tying up around 1:45PM.
