Duluth, MN Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
An impatient Stewart J. “Stewie” Cort, tired of waiting at anchor for Algoma Discovery to finish loading at BNSF Dock 5, weighed anchor midmorning and arrived via the Superior Entry at noon. The first of the 1,000-footers would again take up a stationary position just inside Allouez Bay breathing down the Discovery’s neck… The technique proved successful, with the latter getting going around 13:00 and making an exit for Hamilton at 13:17. Her split cargo consists of blast furnace trim loaded at Duluth’s Hallett 5 and 20,000 tons of Keetac pellets from Superior’s BNSF. The Cort was rearing to go, pulling alongside the dock before the Discovery had even logged her official departure from port. Scheduled repairs at the facility from October 7 to October 12 may keep the vessel in port longer than usual. That was it for traffic on both sides of the harbor; weather conditions on eastern Lake Superior have created an uneven flow of activity over the past week or so. Federal Hunter continues discharging cement at the Ash Grove dock, and American Spirit remains at Enbridge undergoing mechanical repairs.

Marquette, MI – Arthur Pickering
The Erie Trader arrived earlier this week and had to remain in port for a couple extra days due to weather conditions. Arriving yesterday was the Hon. James Oberstar.  On Sunday two vessels are scheduled for arrival at the ore dock in the upper harbor:  The Kaye Barker at 1 a.m. and the Lee Tregurtha at 6 a.m.  Also visiting this weekend in the Lower Harbor is the USEPA Lake Guardian.

Brevort, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Mark W. Barker continued her inaugural season on the lakes with another stop in Brevort for sand, a route that has quickly become one of the most common trading patterns of her young career. Overnight loading commenced upon her 23:30 arrival.

Port Inland, MI – Andrew Meyer
Wilfred Sykes pulled away from the dock with her Duluth-bound stone at 0957 on October 2. American Mariner arrived at 1026 the same morning. She’d depart early the morning of the 3rd. The 3rd would also see the Cuyahoga come and go, as well as the Kaye Barker arrive at 2311. She’d depart just before noon on the 4th. Back for the second time in the week was the American Mariner, with an arrival at 1202 on October 4. She’d leave early the next morning. Classic Arthur M. Anderson arrived on October 5 at 2157 and departed at 1039 on October 6. Kaye E. Barker made an arrival at 1129 on October 6 and a departure at 0417 on October 7. The last traffic of the week was Great Republic with an arrival at 0632 on Saturday and will be the Victory/Maumee.

Southern Lake Michigan Ports – Andrew Meyer
Chicago, IL: Two salties, Exeborg and Pichon, are in the mouth of the Calumet River. The Exeborg arrived on October 7 from Detroit. The Pichon has been in town for a couple days. The Pichon is the former Olza, and I believe the first trip to the lakes since her rename, and with a Singapore flag, is likely no longer part of the Polsteam fleet.
Indiana Harbor, IN: The last several days in Indy have given a lot of tug traffic, but only three big boys. The Manitowoc arrived at 1744 on October 5 and was outbound at 0954 on the 6th. Infrequent caller Baie Comeau arrived at 1330 on October 6 and has yet to depart. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. made an arrival at 0213 Saturday morning. James R. Barker’s evening arrival Saturday should round out the week for traffic.
Gary, IN: After the Speer’s trip last week, she was actually the next arrival in port, which has been considerably quiet the last couple weeks compared to its northern Indiana neighbors. Speer arrived on the 5th in the late afternoon, and departed the next morning. The Philip R. Clarke made an appearance Saturday morning at 0902. It seems a fair bit of traffic from the Great Lakes Fleet has been working the Duluth/Two Harbors to Nanticoke route recently. Over the remainder of the weekend, the American Integrity and Edwin H. Gott are due in town, so traffic will finally pick up a little.
Burns Harbor, IN: The first week of October saw the first arrival of the season for good ol’ Number 1, beginning her usual run from BN5 to Burns Harbor. Her arrival came on October 3 at 1321, and her departure about 22 hours later on October 4. After five days in port, the Federal Yukon departed on October 4 just before midnight. Three midsize lakers- Joseph L. Block, Great Republic, and Dirk VanEnkevort, arrived in the port over the course of the week. The Block arrived on the 4th at 1237 and departed early the next morning, the Republic arrived less than eight hours behind the Block’s departure, and the Dirk Van Enkevort arrived about eight hours after the Republic. Both Republic and Dirk would depart in the morning on October 6. Local gal Burns Harbor is due at 1400 Sunday afternoon.

Port Dolomite, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Laura L. VanEnkevort/Joseph H. Thompson arrived Carmeuse Cedarville Operations at 02:30 for a load of stone. The former WWII troop transport and her pushing tug were outbound 12 hours later for a trip to Lorain.

Calcite, MI – Andrew Meyer
A steady flow of traffic has characterized the first week of October for the port. Arthur M. Anderson would arrive on October 2 to pick up another load of stone for Duluth in her regular 2022 pattern, although the backhaul of iron ore seems to be going to Nanticoke more recently. Canadian visitor Algoma Intrepid arrived on the 2nd at 1750,  and would depart several hours after the Anderson’s departure on the morning of October 3. John J. Boland was next in line, arriving at 1155 on the third, immediately replacing the Intrepid. Also arriving on the 3rd was the Dirk VanEnkevort and Michigan Trader. The pair would depart roughly around the same time as the Boland in the early morning hours of October 4. October 4 would see one more ATB- the Defiance and Ashtabula- arrive in port, with a 1000 arrival and a 2147 departure. John G. Munson was up next, making yet another of her thousands of visits to the port of Calcite over her 70 year career at sunrise on October 5. She’d be outbound before the clocks turned over to the 6th of October. Sam Laud arrived at 1521 on the 6th, and departed around the time the sun set and the moon rose on October 7. Calumet made an arrival late evening on October 7, and an early morning departure Saturday morning, a morning which would also see the Dirk and Michy make an arrival in town at 0303. Three Rand vessels- Manitowoc, H. Lee White, and Menominee, are due the remaining part of the weekend.

Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
Joyce L. VanEnkevort departed for Marysville at 18:00.

Detroit, MI Windsor, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Living legend Arthur M. Anderson was on hand to kick off another fall day in the Motor City at midnight. Loaded with stone from Port Inland on a downbound trip delayed by weather conditions, the classic steamer – no stranger to storms herself – discharged a portion of her cargo at SRM Concrete before shifting up to Mistersky to fuel around 04:00. Grand River Navigation’s American Mariner had cleared the dock a few hours earlier bound for the Soo. The Anderson departed at 07:38 for Marine City, where the rest of her stone load would be put ashore. WWII veteran Lee A. Tregurtha was next on hand at Mistersky after unloading coal at Zug Island; she departed for Marquette at 11:10. Cuyahoga arrived with stone for Lafarge at noon, later shifting down to Sterling and fueling up for a 21:30 departure, while G.L. Ostrander/Integrity made a port call with cement for Holcim in the meantime. The headline of the day was a 15:00 “oopsie” for Sam Laud in the river – the vessel ran aground off the coast of Peche Island on the Windsor side of the river while attempting to dock at Southwestern Sales East. She has since been freed as of Sunday morning. An always-appreciated 21:00 Wilfred Sykes arrival capped off Saturday traffic as the steamer stopped for fuel at Mistersky. Harvest Spirit is at anchor off of ADM; Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II are roosting on the River Rouge.
