Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
The last day of the summer months in Duluth began with the 00:24 departure of American Century, loaded with 68,000 tons of coal and destined for DTE’s power plant in St. Clair. Things got exciting later in the morning with a rare twofer departure under one bridge lift, with both Great Republic (09:42) and Hon. James L. Oberstar (09:47) heading out for trips to other ports on Lake Superior. Republic had discharged stone at CN-Hallett Dock 5 and loaded ore at CN Dock 6 before departing for Two Harbors, possibly for fuel; the Oberstar was outbound empty for Marquette after unloading stone, also at Hallett. It wouldn’t be long before Superior saw a twofer of its own with Algoma Harvester and Algoma Guardian trading places a little after 11:00. This is the Guardian’s first Twin Ports arrival in over a year after leaving layup in Port Weller earlier this week. Algoma’s veteran bulker had been briefly activated in the spring but never made her way up to Lake Superior. The Harvester, for her part, is on her way to Quebec City with 28,500 tons of Hibtac pellets loaded at BNSF Dock 5. Taking the dock from anchorage, the Guardian would commence a load of Keetac. Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader, next in line at Burlington Northern, would go to anchor around noon. August wrapped up in the Zenith City on an American Integrity arrival, which saw the footer clear the Duluth Ship Canal shortly after 20:00 and back her way in to CN Dock 6. ASC fleetmate Burns Harbor was inbound the Superior Entry two hours later to take a delay at Enbridge, due next at BNSF after the Clyde/Trader. Speaking of which, the tug/barge combo would rumble in at 23:33 following the Guardian’s departure at 23:11. The former is taking on 35,000 tons of Hibtac for Toledo; the latter is currently laden with 25,500 of Keetac.

The northbound pair Victory/Maumee were inbound the Detroit River three minutes after midnight, on their way to Algoma Soo from Toledo and in need of some fuel. Mistersky had them covered, sending the two back on their way around 04:45. Ocean Voyager, quickly becoming a common sight to see after many stops at the Motor City this year, was inbound again for the port authority dock on an upbound cruise at 07:24. Passengers are treated to consecutive stops in metropolises Cleveland and Detroit. Walter J. McCarthy Jr. arrived at 09:51 for Mistersky, saltie Johanna G cast off from Morterm at 11:00 before spinning around and departing for Hamilton, Leonard M/Huron Spirit were inbound at 11:23 for Nicholson, and Whitefish Bay pulled in for fuel at Sterling around noon. The McCarthy and Whitefish would be back on the road at 13:25 and 14:00 for Two Harbors and Stoneport, respectively. Immediately taking the footer’s place would be John J. Boland, who departed for Charlevoix at 16:17. At 18:35, the Voyager and her passengers were headed north for the next stop on the itinerary, a visit to picturesque Little Current. They passed anchored laker John G. Munson just south of Belle Isle, who was just making preparations to get underway for an eventual docking at Motor City Materials on the River Rouge. Training vessel State of Michigan would go to anchor for the night in nearly the exact same position as the Munson after making a run up and down the Detroit River. After unloading lime at Carmeuse and taking a quick pit stop at Mistersky, American Mariner departed for Cedarville at 21:39; New York/Double Skin 509A weren’t far behind with a departure from Nicholson for Cleveland. Sea Eagle II/St. Marys Cement II remain at their frequent calling spot of St. Marys Cement.
