Thunder Bay, ON – Joshua Hebeisen
Potash is flying off the shelves in T-Bay, creating a major backup in the harbor expanding well into the anchorage. As of Sunday night, vessels waiting on the hook included Gardno, Federal Bristol, Verila, Brant, Mamry, Federal Fraser, Elbeborg, Federal Biscay, Resko, Vectis Pride, and Federal Dee. Yep, it’s going to be a while…
In port, Federal Franklin is at MobilEx, fleetmate Federal Mayumi is docked at Thunder Bay Terminals, and fellow saltie Onego Bayou is handling cargo at Keefer Terminal. Even an American vessel would get in on the action, with American Mariner loading grain to the north at Richardson Main. Her AIS destination reads “GO BILLS” in a nod to tonight’s Monday Night Football game.
Marquette, MI – Noah H.
Following a brief break in shipping action, Marquette saw a consistent stream of arrivals starting on Friday the 8th. First up was the Joseph L. Block, arriving from the west at 00:53 after unloading stone at Duluth the previous day. Next up was the first of a trio of Interlake classics that would arrive through Sunday, the Herbert C. Jackson. She would pull up to the southernmost dock across from the Block. That pairing would last until 16:40 when the Block pulled away to depart for Burns Harbor. The Jackson wouldn’t stay for too much longer either, as she handed the northernmost dock position over to fleet mate Lee A. Tregurtha directly after her 21:49 departure for Detroit. The LAT’s loading would cross over into Saturday, concluding with a 12:54 departure. She will be following Herbie down to Detroit. The final Interlake vessel of the weekend, the Hon. James L. Oberstar, would not come until 22:50 on Saturday. It seems as though the consistent vessel arrivals may have finally inflicted a temporary supply shortage for the Oberstar’s load, as it would take the longest of the bunch. It wasn’t until 18:32 on Sunday evening that she was outbound for Burns Harbor, making for over a 19 hour visit. For those wondering where the last of the 4 Interlake classics was during this stretch, look no further: the Kaye E. Barker will be next up at the docks on Monday after unloading some stone.
Holland, MI – Noah H.
There have been moderately long stretches of time without traffic in Holland this season, with the last non-Undaunted visit coming from the Herbert C. Jackson back in August. Finally, the Great Republic broke the laker dry spell with a 17:01 arrival on Saturday. She came loaded with stone from Port Inland, which she unloaded first at Verplank for a short while before shifting up to Brewer’s City Dock for the rest. The overall process took roughly 9 hours before she departed at 02:54 on Sunday, due next at Calcite.
Muskegon, MI – Noah H.
On Friday, Kaye E. Barker arrived at 04:52 with a load of stone from Port Inland. She headed across the lake to unload at Cobb Verplank. It’s her second visit to the area in the past handful of days, the other being a Grand Haven trip. Next, Samuel de Champlain/Innovation departed at 07:59 from the Holcim dock. The duo headed down Lake Michigan to unload some more at St. Joughnuts. Finally, the Barker left at 13:13 to head over to Lake Huron’s Meldrum Bay to load stone for Marquette. The weekend ended up being all quiet on the shipping front.

Algoma Conveyor cleared at 03:23 Thursday downbound for Johnstown, ON, with salt. Algoma Compass cleared at 17:35 Thursday upbound for Milwaukee, WI, with salt. Algoma Buffalo cleared 04:31 Friday downbound for Cleveland, OH, with salt. Algoma Intrepid cleared at 03:51 Saturday upbound for Parry Sound, ON, with salt.

Prentiss Brown/St. Marys Challenger unloaded at St. Marys Cement and left for Cleveland. Robert S. Pierson left for Bruce Mines, Sam Laud departed to Detroit, and Dirk S. VanEnkevort/Michigan Trader headed to Silver Bay, stopping for fuel in Detroit.

On Friday, September 8, the Owen Sound Transportation ferry Pelee Islander hit the dock at the Jackson St. Pier in Sandusky on the starboard side of the stern, causing a 12-14″ gash above the waterline. The passengers were allowed off after waiting 1.5 hours by US Customs. About 9 cars are going to spend the night on the Islander. On Saturday the tug George Gradel was moved over and tied onto the Islander and moved her into the dock and the autos were removed and locked up in the US Customs lot for inspection and release. After inspection by the Coast Guard, the ferry sailed under her own power to Leamington, ON, where she will be inspected for repair.

Algoma Buffalo arrived to load salt at Cargill. American Courage is on the shuttles. A late-night arrival was Algoma Innovator, being assisted once again by G tug Ohio

Mesabi Miner delivered 59,000 tons of UTAC pellets to the Bulk Terminal. Departing were Algoma Buffalo to Toronto and Algoma Innovator to Goderich. Dorothy Ann/Pathfinder is on the “Marblehead shuttle” as the tug and barge are returning for a second time to Marblehead.
