Duluth, MN – Superior, WI – Joshua Hebeisen
Loaded with 25,500 Keetac pellets – her first cargo of the season – veteran bulker Algoma Discovery cleared the Superior Entry in the predawn darkness bound for Hamilton’s ArcelorMittal Dofasco works. She should spend the rest of the shipping season hauling ore between Lakes Superior and Ontario after basking up in Thunder Bay during the warmer months. Her 06:08 departure was perfect timing for the inbound American Integrity, who was able to take the dock around 07:00 and commence her load. The footer remains at BNSF as of Sunday night. A pair of the Integrity’s 1,000-foot ASC fleetmates, American Century and Walter J. McCarthy Jr., would be the only traffic on the Duluth side of the harbor with their respective departures. The Century was outbound at 10:09 from SMET with coal for St. Clair and Monroe, while the McCarthy bid farewell at 18:48 with CN 6 taconite for Cleveland.

Spragge, ON – Joshua Hebeisen

Stoneport, MI – Joshua Hebeisen
At 03:00 Sunday morning, Presque Isle was treated to an uncommon appearance of CSL’s Rt. Hon. Paul J. Martin. The Martin, due at the dock to load stone, would be forced to go to anchor alongside Clyde S. VanEnkevort/Erie Trader and wait her turn in line. Clyde and her barge would leave the Canadian laker all alone out in the lake upon their 06:30 arrival, replacing fellow ATB pair Olive L. Moore/Menominee under the loaders. Moore and Menominee would then head south to their usual haunts along the Saginaw River. VanEnkevort’s own combo departed at 19:30 for Marquette; the Martin, however, still remains on the hook at the time of this writing.

A morning vessel lineup for fuel at Mistersky began around 02:30 with Interlake’s James R. Barker, upbound from her fleet’s home port of Cleveland, Ohio and in need of a drink of the petroleum variety. Her departure for Two Harbors at 07:53 allowed American Courage, slowly crawling up to the dock in anticipation of her turn, to tie up next. Hon. James L. Oberstar would employ a similar maneuver with a slow stroll up the Detroit River throughout the morning, finally getting her own chance to fuel after the Courage continued downbound to Cleveland shortly after noon. The classic laker would clear Detroit herself at 14:06 bound for Calcite. In the midst of all the fueling action, Iver Bright arrived at 09:50 for Ajax Paving; Reestborg went to anchor early afternoon to wait for Harvest Spirit at ADM. G.L. Ostrander/Integrity brought in cement for Holcim at 19:52, and Joyce L. VanEnkevort/Great Lakes Trader were late-night customers to Mistersky after the dock received an evening break.
